Genre: Documentary

“The Most Unknown Artist” is an independent documentary about Susan Kaiser Vogel, an American artist associated with the Light and Space movement in Los Angeles during the late 1970s and 1980s. Once part of the city’s thriving art scene, she later disappeared from view — forgotten by the institutions that celebrated her peers.

Told through an intimate, distinctly female and feminist lens, the film offers a deeply personal herstoric narrative that reclaims a missing voice in postwar American art. As Vogel revisits her past, the story quietly exposes how women artists were often labeled as “crazy” — by others and eventually by themselves — raising uncomfortable questions about how gender, invisibility, and societal bias shape artistic identity.

The central figure of the film is Susan Kaiser Vogel – an American artist associated with the renowned California Light and Space movement. Like many women artists, Susan’s work has not been properly recorded in art history, despite her having created numerous significant works and contributed to the artistic environment of Los Angeles. In the film, Susan reflects on her artworks, her personal experiences that have motivated or hindered her artistic path, and the people who shaped her world.
